Summary:
When Mullen Motors' lighting fixtures needed an upgrade, owners, Rich and Bill Mullen, turned to RAB Lighting for energy-efficient LED fixtures that gives the Southold, New York Chrysler dealership a modern edge and makes their cars sparkle and shine.

"In an auto dealership, good lighting is critical to sales success," says Rich Mullen. "What really sold me on the RAB product was the high lumen output and clean light distribution they produce. Plus, they're much less expensive to run and maintain compared to metal halide fixtures."

Rob Rossi, at Revco Lighting + Electrical Supply, recommended that the Mullens switch to RAB's LED fixtures. He suggested a one-for-one replacement for the existing 150 Watt floodlights with RAB's ultra-efficient 39 Watt LED floodlights and replacing their existing 250 Watt floodlights with RAB's high-performance 78 Watt floodlights. In all, 34 fixtures were installed, resulting in energy savings of more than 70%. The mounting hardware was a perfect match, making for an easy installation.

RAB sales rep, Peter Gregory at Damin Sales, gave the Mullen brothers an LED floodlight sample to seal the deal.

"Replacing a metal halide with RAB LED always means big savings for the end users and Mullen Motors was no exception," says Gregory. "The lighting upgrade delivered better light output with a huge reduction in energy and re-lamping costs. With a 100,000 hour life, it's practically maintenance-free. Ultimately, the LED luminaires will pay for themselves in savings."

With bright light output, suitability for wet locations, die-cast aluminum housing and a chip and fade resistant finish, RAB's luminaires are built to withstand harsh weather conditions like those found on the North Shore of Long Island.

"RAB's LED fixtures come with a bumper-to-bumper five-year warranty that covers not only the LEDs, but the finish and the drivers too, so there's never anything to worry about," says Rossi. "Also, RAB Lighting is a well-established company with a dependable, customer-centric reputation. They are extremely helpful and really stand behind their products."

Ross Barna, CEO of RAB Lighting, the Northvale, New Jersey-based leader in outdoor LED lighting, says, "Car dealers know that great lighting helps sell more cars, especially the ones on the lot. RAB LED not only enhances the appearance of the dealership by showcasing their cars, but also reduces their operating expenses by reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs. An LED lighting upgrade is a great way to make your dealership shine."

Rich Mullen agrees, "The dealership looks much brighter and the savings are quite substantial, so I'm a big fan. The RAB LED floodlights exceeded my expectations."

Local Suppliers & Contractors:
Crescent Electric Supply (Madison, WI) is the distributor and Schwind & Lawless Sales (Milwaukee, WI) is the manufacturer's representative.

Energy & Cost Savings
Franchise owners will experience 90% improved energy efficiency and save over $1,200 per year in energy costs using RAB's LED luminaires vs. incandescent lighting systems. Maintenance and re-lamping costs are also significantly reduced, as RAB LEDs have a 100,000-hour lifespan, which amounts to 27 years at an average daily usage of 10 hours.

Other Fixture Benefits
The gooseneck fixture is a 13W high-performance LED installed to replace a 70W metal halide, one for one. Benefits include:

  • The gooseneck head provides an aimable light source. The angle and direction of the light is adjustable.
  • Energy efficient and low maintenance for big energy cost savings.
  • Modern, attractive design

Summary:
When Wisconsin-based restaurant chain Culver's, known for their ButterBurgers and fresh frozen custard, sought to upgrade their outdoor lighting, they required fixtures that not only performed well, but also provided a warm and inviting atmosphere that made customers feel welcome.

"When I heard Crescent Electric was looking for an LED vendor for the Culver's account, I immediately sent them a RAB LED gooseneck sample," said Pat Lawless, from Schwind & Lawless Sales. "I knew they would love the world-class quality, direction-adjustable head and attractive design. RAB Lighting's Gooseneck LED luminaires fit Culver's specifications to a tee."

"One of the things that our franchise partners really like about the RAB gooseneck fixtures is that they have the ability to aim the light source," says Steve Datka, Director of Design for Culver Franchising Systems, Inc. "This means that the angle and direction of the light is adjustable. It may not sound like a big deal, but lighting the walkway so our guests feel safe entering and leaving our restaurant is very important to us. So that's a feature that we really appreciate."

Lighting the outside of a restaurant is also about introducing it to the public. Like any other design element, a restaurant's outdoor lighting should reflect its personality and ambiance. It sets the tone for the customer's dining experience. So the overall look of the fixtures is an important consideration.

"RAB's gooseneck fixtures complement the building design, so I knew the Culver's people would like them," said Kris Krueger of Crescent Electric Supply. "We also made sure that the quality was excellent. Ever since we started using them, the RAB fixtures have worked to perfection. They even have a five-year bumper-to-bumper warranty, which covers the LED, the driver, the gasket and the finish. RAB Lighting is a company that stands behind its products."

RAB began providing LED gooseneck fixtures to Culver's restaurants in March 2012. Culver's has mounted the fixtures on four more restaurants since then and have another seven coming up. They install approximately 18 to 25 gooseneck fixtures per restaurant, depending on the size. Culver's is opening an average of two or three new restaurants every month and plans to continue using RAB gooseneck fixtures to light the outside of their restaurants.

Ross Barna, CEO of RAB Lighting, the Northvale, New Jersey-based leader in outdoor LED lighting, says, "Our LED gooseneck line is designed to bring energy efficiency to Main Street USA. We are excited about the opportunities that store owners have to save money and reduce their maintenance costs while providing great lighting for their customers."

In addition to being attractive and providing a bright light, our LED fixtures are energy-efficient, which helps franchise owners save money. Also, with a 100,000 hour life, they are practically maintenance-free. Owners won't have to worry about replacing bulbs or fixtures for many years to come."

Kris Krueger says, "The most important thing is that the Culver's people are happy with the fixtures, so I'm happy with them, too."

Summary:
As any restaurant owner knows, an inviting atmosphere is critical to a restaurant's success. Which is why the management team at Thatcher McGhee's Irish Pub & Eatery, a popular gathering place and sports bar in Pompton Plains, New Jersey, took great care with their lighting when they opened the restaurant's second branch in nearby Denville in early 2012. Thanks to high-performing, aesthetically-pleasing, and energy-efficient LED fixtures from RAB Lighting, the bright, warm, and welcoming ambiance that Thatcher McGhee's created for patrons is also as environmentally-friendly and "green" as the Emerald Isle itself.

Following the success of its flagship location, no detail was overlooked for the grand opening of Thatcher McGhee's Denville branch in January 2012. "Lighting sets the mood for everything," co-owner and long-time restaurateur Brendan Madden explained. "We can't put enough emphasis on the lighting, especially in the restaurant business."

Seeking a bright and energy-efficient option to light the pub's exterior signage, Madden worked with Sloatsburg, New York-based electrical contracting firm Roland Zimmermann Electrical Contractor Inc. to review their options. After considering several market options, "we really liked RAB's new 13 Watt LED gooseneck lamps," Jason Zimmermann, Principal along with father Roland, said of the ultimate recommendation he made to Madden. "Shortly after RAB introduced its LED gooseneck lamps to the market, we decided to try a few to light the restaurant's front sign and we all agreed that they looked gorgeous at night. We installed five across the front of the restaurant and then installed another six in the back to bring attention to the restaurant's unique thatched roof; we found that they successfully lit the entire area of the roof and looked great," he said.

"RAB's new LGOOSE "gooseneck" LED fixtures offer restaurants like Thatcher McGhee's the perfect combination of vintage appeal and cutting-edge performance and efficiency," confirmed RAB CEO Ross Barna. "Featuring specially-engineered optics, a frosted glass lens, and a high Color Rendering index (CRI) of 86, the LGOOSE casts a smooth, natural, and uniform light with no glare, making it ideal for illuminating and highlighting signage in the retail and hospitality sector. Designed to match the architectural environment of the typical Main Street storefront," he added, "its three decorative shade options support the majority of outdoor retail and hospitality decors in one universal fixture design. At the same time," he continued, "the LGOOSE's 13 Watt LED technology delivers more than 80% energy savings relative to an equivalent 75 Watt incandescent option and provides many years of maintenance-free light output without compromising quality of light."

Used with a photosensor that activates them after dusk, "RAB's LGOOSE fixtures offer Thatcher McGhee's the old-style gooseneck charm consistent with the restaurant's theme and decor, but they're efficient and long-lasting too, which are important factors," Zimmermann said, "because nobody wants to be changing bulbs 30+ feet up on a regular basis."

Following their smooth installation in March 2012, response to the gooseneck LEDs by Thatcher McGhee's employees and patrons has been nothing but glowing. "The lights create a warm ambiance and their spread and coverage area are excellent," Zimmermann said. Restaurant co-owner Madden fully agrees. "They accent the building perfectly with a beautiful wash of light and draw attention in a very high-quality way," Madden said. "As soon as we put them up, we heard positive feedback about how great they looked."

Delighted with their lighting choice, Thatcher McGhee's' newest location has met with tremendous success so far and the building's appealing LED technology has contributed to making this cozy, casual, and sustainable eatery a go-to spot for diners far and wide. "Lighting is huge in the restaurant business," Madden concluded, "and based on their quality, efficiency, long life, and cost, these RAB LEDs are the way to go."

Energy & Cost Savings
$20,000 savings over five years.

Other Fixture Benefits

  • All RAB's LED lights have an average life span of 50,000 hours that ensures long life and minimal maintenance.
  • The WPLED20 provides 65 lumens per Watt and the WPLED10S provides 41 lumens per Watt. Both wall packs have weatherproof, high temperature silicone gaskets, superior heat-sinking with die cast aluminum housing and external fins
  • The ALED52 provides 64 lumens per Watt and has a "forward throw" especially suited for mounting on the sides of buildings and walls for illuminating perimeter parking areas.
  • The BLED13 provides 71 lumens per Watt for pathway lighting

Summary:
When Don Aslett, author, business owner, CEO and the "King of Clean" created the Museum of Clean in Pocatello, Idaho, he looked toward RAB's energy-efficient LED fixtures to help him achieve the LEED-certified status he required. Because Don Aslett isn't just clean. He's green.

"Don wanted LED lighting because it would be more environmentally responsible and more economical than other commercial lights," said Andy Akers of D & S Electrical Supply Co. "I recommended RAB fixtures because they combine world class performance with a clean, high-tech style that I knew he'd like."

Don Aslett says the Museum and its grounds are in the final phases of becoming LEED certified, a recognized standard for measuring a building's sustainability by promoting environmentally-friendly design and construction practices. LED lighting fixtures reduce light pollution and will earn the Museum a light pollution reduction credit towards certification.

Aslett's decision to use RAB Lighting's LED fixtures will also save him about $20,000 in operating expenses over the next five years. "The eco-friendliness and cost savings is great," he says. "I also really appreciate the aesthetics of RAB's luminaires. They're modern-looking, clean, cutting-edge and beautiful. They make my museum look good, so they make me look good."

The outdoor areas of the Museum property that required lighting included a parking lot, a small park, walkways, the building perimeter, and a clock tower that's illuminated from the inside out. Ken Bielenberg of Electric Construction & Sales installed a wide variety of 84 RAB Lighting LED products, such as area lights, bollards, floodlights, wallpacks and motion sensors.

"The RAB fixtures were really easy to install," said Bielenberg. "Usually for an area of that size, I would need four circuits. But because LED lighting uses so much less energy than other older lighting technology, I needed only one."

"Museums now know they can lower their energy use and expenses by making some simple changes. One of the easiest ways to do this is by replacing metal halide fixtures with LED lighting," says Ross Barna, CEO of RAB Lighting, the Northvale, New Jersey-based leader in outdoor LED lighting. "Many museums are now doing just that and have substantially reduced their energy bills. At RAB, we are dedicated to helping museums and other establishments achieve greater sustainability."

Aslett encourages everyone he meets, locals and tourists alike, to experience the Museum through personal visits, family field trips and corporate events. And besides, thanks in part to RAB Lighting, he enthused, "I have the most beautiful parking lot in town!"

Summary:
Situated across 25 buildings on a beautiful 125-acre campus, the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, AL provides eligible veterans with a broad range of top-notch health care services. And, thanks to a recent lighting upgrade involving LED technology from leading manufacturer RAB Lighting, the facility is now also assured of the highest-performing, most energy-efficient, and low maintenance lighting to help support the daily needs of both patients and staff.

In early 2010, the hospital's management team identified a prime opportunity to upgrade the lighting installed within the over 200 foot long, glass-enclosed corridor that connects the facility's administration building with a patient care building. "The expanse was lit with two dozen 50 Watt metal halide wallpack fixtures, and the light was harsh and definitely more than needed," confirmed Tommy Brown, Vice President of Northport, AL-based Northport Electric, the electrical distributor of record for TVAMC.

Randy Davis, Director of Maintenance for the 1 million square-foot facility, wholeheartedly agreed. "The previously-installed lamps definitely cast too much light and would typically turn yellow as they aged," he said. According to Davis, the fixtures also proved to be a high-maintenance concern for his staff. "We always seemed to be replacing the lamps, ballasts, or ignitors in those systems and I just couldn't have my people tied up fixing them all the time."

That summer, following an assessment of their options, Davis elected to upgrade the lighting in the corridor using RAB's "WPLED10," a 10 Watt LED wallpack unit. An attractive-looking and easy-to-install LED fixture that directs light downward for maximum visibility, the RAB LED luminaires provide an ideal quantity and quality of light which support the safe and comfortable passage of both staff and patients through the corridor while reducing energy consumption by an impressive 40 watts per fixture.

"RAB Lighting's 10 Watt LED wallpack fixture was an optimal solution for the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center," confirmed Ross Barna, CEO of the Northvale, New Jersey-based leader in outdoor LED lighting. "In addition to delivering outstanding energy savings of 80% relative to the hospital's previous 50 Watt metal halide technology, the wall-mounted LED fixture incorporates a full cutoff, fully shielded design to ensure that light is delivered precisely where it's needed. In addition, the fixture's durable design and long life will ensure many years of reliable, high-quality operation for the hospital and significantly reduce maintenance costs and concerns for hospital staff, freeing them up to attend to other, more pressing needs and patient-related issues."

Response to the lighting upgrade has been overwhelmingly positive. "RAB's LED fixtures were a perfect fit for what TVAMC was trying to achieve," Northport Electric's Brown said. "Based on the long life of the LED technology, the hospital's maintenance staff will be relieved of the heavy burdens associated with maintaining the previous system. In addition, the RAB LED fixtures will help this government-operated facility meet federal energy efficiency mandates, supporting both the hospital's operational goals as well as the nation's energy conservation and environmental objectives."

Steve Crosthwait, Salesman for Atlanta, GA-based manufacturer's representative Electrical Products, Inc., also praised the upgrade for the comprehensive benefits it offers. "The RAB WPLED10 delivers the right amount of light where you need it, avoiding the harshness and glare associated with the previous system," Crosthwait said. "The fixture's design also has a great aesthetic and is an easy, one-for-one replacement, making installation as smooth as glass."

Perhaps no one is happier, however, than TVAMC Director of Maintenance Randy Davis himself. With no lamp failures since the upgrade was conducted in 2010, Davis reports that "we've been extremely impressed with the RAB fixtures. The color is good, RAB's salespeople are very professional, and their five-year warranty assured us of the product's quality and provided us with the security we needed to make this investment."

So much so that TVAMC has since installed other RAB LEDs - specifically the company's 52 Watt LED Wallpacks - in the facility's Sports Atrium and will be purchasing others for use in their main lobby, which features pendant and recessed lighting fixtures mounted in hard-to-reach 25-foot ceilings. "We'll definitely be installing more RAB LEDs, particularly in difficult-to-maintain areas like atriums and entryways," Davis confirmed.

With a new lighting upgrade strategy that serves its veterans in the highest way possible and helps support the nation's drive for greater energy independence, Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center is well-positioned for a strong and energy-efficient future. Agreed TVAMC's Davis, "so far so good."

Summary:
A newly-renovated, professional office building in Jamestown, New York recently achieved the highest-quality, most energy-efficient exterior lighting possible when its old high pressure sodium lighting fixtures were replaced with the newest in energy-efficient LED technology from RAB Lighting.

Located at 512 West 3rd in Jamestown, the single-story building houses a number of healthcare and professional business tenants and is a showcase property within the portfolio of commercial and residential facilities owned by Jamestown's Rental Properties LLC. Like many of the buildings in the historic city of Jamestown, which is located one hour south of Buffalo on the lower tip of Chautauqua Lake in Western New York, the original facility on the site had been constructed over 60 years ago and was ready for an upgrade. "The original building on this site was built in the 1940s and was redone in the 1990s," says Jody Peterson, owner of Jamestown's Rental Properties. "In an effort to attract a new, high-level professional clientele, however, we renovated and modernized the original structure in the winter of 2010 and expanded the parking lot capacity."

After making such significant investments in the property, the installation of good exterior lighting became a priority for Peterson. Similar to other buildings in this industrial city, the original structure had relied on outdated and less-efficient high pressure sodium as its exterior light source and was overdue for an upgrade. Says Peterson, "In keeping with the building's new modern ambiance, we were looking for a nice, crisp light outdoors to properly illuminate the exterior and promote safety for our tenants and visitors while cutting down on energy."

- Jody Peterson, Owner, Jamestown's Rental Properties

The solution came in the form of a variety of LED fixtures from RAB Lighting. According to Peterson, "We went with 20 Watt LED fixtures mounted off the roof line on 24" arms with adjustable swivels to project lighting from the roof downward, as well as 5 Watt step lights for a wall wash effect on the front of the building to light the sidewalk. We also used a series of 20 Watt double canopy LED fixtures underneath the cupolas in the front to create a warm and well-lit entryway."

Electrician Bruce Hokanson, owner of Jamestown-based electrical contracting firm Hokanson Electric, praises the ease with which he was able to install the RAB fixtures at Peterson's building in the summer of 2011. "The fixtures were all pre-wired, so they went in without any problems," he confirms. "The 20 Watt fixtures on the roof were also great because their swivel component allowed us to adjust them based on how the light hit the building, so we were able to try out a few different positions and then adjust them to the ideal setting," he says. "RAB's WPLED20, CLED2X10, and SLED5 fixtures were indeed the perfect choices to cover this building's various exterior lighting needs," agrees RAB Lighting's Ross Barna, CEO of the Northvale, New Jersey-based leader in outdoor LED lighting. "The arm and swivel accessories available with our 20 Watt LED wallpack offer a great deal of flexibility in the use of that fixture and the 20 Watt CLED ceiling-mounted fixture and 5 Watt SLED fixture are both powerful but discreet, low-profile lighting options." In addition to delivering nearly 80% energy savings relative to the building's previous HPS source, all of the fixtures feature a long 50,000-hour life as well as a fully- gasketed, die-cast aluminum housing to ensure durability in outdoor settings. "Overall, all of these LEDs emit light in a uniform pattern around the fixture so that the final result is warm, pleasing, and energy-efficient illumination surrounding the building," says Barna.

According to Matt Beebe, Branch Manager of Rexel in Jamestown, the electrical distributor which supplied the RAB fixtures for the building's lighting upgrade, Peterson has been among the first building owners in the city to embrace LEDs for their powerful light output and energy- saving capabilities, but he certainly won't be the last. "RAB's broad selection of high-quality, aesthetically-pleasing, and affordable LED fixtures make it easy for building owners like Jody to upgrade to LED technology and enjoy the quality light output, long life, and outstanding energy efficiency they deliver," Beebe says. As for other holdings within Jamestown's Rental Properties LLC, Peterson has been so pleased with the RAB LEDs installed at his 512 West 3rd site that he's planning similar upgrades at both a 5,400-square- foot food distribution center and a 20,000-square-foot medical center that he owns soon. "I would advise other building owners not to be afraid to spend the money to upgrade to LEDs," he says. "It's an investment you'll make once in a far superior product which will pay itself back every month, and the benefits will be very long-lasting." "Overall," Peterson concludes, "we love the RAB LEDs we installed, and the light they cast really helps to support the inviting and professional ambiance we set out to create for this building. RAB's LED fixtures are very attractive, they perform beautifully, and their energy savings is a given. They're exactly what we were looking for."

Summary:
When it came to supporting Assured Self Storage's recent need for a light source that was bright, energy-efficient, and low-maintenance, RAB LEDs were a one-stop solution.

Newly constructed in the fall of 2010, Assured Self Storage of Duncanville, Texas consists of 10 single-story buildings housed on roughly 5 acres of property, with each building containing multiple storage units ranging in size from 2,400 to 10,000 square feet. Though each building is different, all share a need for bright, long-lasting, and energy-efficient lighting.

"Exterior lighting is extremely important to our facility for a number of reasons," confirms Christine Thurston, Residential Manager of Assured Self Storage in Duncanville, a city of 38,000 located just minutes from downtown Dallas. "First, exterior lighting is key to us because there's no lighting in most of the units, so lighting is critical to enhancing nighttime safety, both inside the units and on the property," she says. "We've also invested in a significant number of security cameras on the property-a total of 32 inside and outside the units-so good lighting is imperative in order to capture footage of theft or other unwanted activity."

In addition to supporting orientation and promoting safety and security on the premises, reducing maintenance costs ranked high on the wish list for the rapidly-growing Assured Self Storage franchise, one of an estimated 50,000 self-storage facilities in the U.S., according to real estate giant Cushman & Wakefield. "Like so many business owners and facility professionals, the management team at Assured Self Storage did not want to play "Whack A Mole" with their lighting, constantly having to chase and replace lamps/bulbs as they failed one or two at a time on any given day," explains RAB Southeastern Regional Manager Terry Crawley. "They wanted a long-lasting light source that they could rely on to minimize maintenance costs and concerns," he says.

Energy efficiency was another key requirement for Assured Self Storage. "Our lights are on timers and are typically on for a 12-hour period from dusk to dawn each day," Thurston shares. "We're always looking at our costs and, given those long operating hours, we wanted our lighting to be very efficient to help reduce our energy consumption and costs."

RAB Lighting's 20 Watt LED wallpack fixtures successfully addressed all of Assured Self Storage's requirements in one comprehensive solution. "Delivering over 80% energy savings relative to an equivalent 150 Watt metal halide light source, RAB's WPLED20 wall-mounted LED fixture offers a long, 50,000-hour life as well as a fully-gasketed, die-cast aluminum housing to ensure durability in outdoor settings," says RAB's Ross Barna, CEO of the Northvale, New Jersey-based leader in outdoor LED lighting. According to Barna, " the fixture offers over 1400 lumens of initial light output, 5000K color temperature, and outstanding chromatic stability. The fixture also incorporates a full cutoff, fully shielded design to ensure that light is delivered precisely where it's needed. Finally," he shares, "the WPLED20 is UL-listed for wet locations, has a minimum starting temperature of -30°C (-33°F), and is suitable for use in ambient temperatures of up to 50°C (122°F), ensuring the fixture's reliable operation in extreme temperature or inclement weather settings."

Impressed with RAB's WPLED20 solution, Thurston and her management team installed over 50 of the LED wallpack fixtures throughout their facilities in February 2011 and haven't looked back since. "We love the lighting," Thurston confirms. "It's soft and gives a very inviting feeling and rich appearance to the property. In addition to the high quality of the light, our parent company, The Assured Group, loves the impact these fixtures have had on our energy bills and plans to use these lights in other facilities they build."

According to Mike Gray, Sales Manager for Irving, Texas-based RAB rep agency Burrus and Matthews, "RAB's WPLED20 fixtures provided the broad-range benefits of safety and security, long life, and minimal maintenance and were absolutely the ideal solution for Assured Self Storage." Adds Gray, "maintenance and energy costs are among Assured's biggest sources of overhead and this fixture optimally addressed both factors. In addition, installation of the fixtures by Icon Electrical Contractors was smooth, leading to a great overall experience for this valued customer."

Assured Self Storage's Thurston couldn't agree more. "RABs LEDs deliver the perfect amount of light and really help our customers to feel safe in their surroundings, which is critical to our mission as a responsible business and community partner. And, in addition to their energy efficiency and long life," Thurston adds, "many customers have also shared with us that the lights look great and are very attractive-so we couldn't ask for more."

Providing high-quality, energy-efficient, long-lasting, and highly sustainable LEDs to this growth business in Duncanville, Texas-which has been nicknamed "The City of Champions" based on the success of its local businesses, schools, and citizens-RAB has provided this friendly, community-minded city with one more reason to be proud.

Summary:
RAB Lighting is ensuring that a rock and roll legend will "Not Fade Away" by lighting the walkway to the popular tribute statue of Buddy Holly in Lubbock, Texas with its energy-efficient LED bollards.

Famous for songs "Peggy Sue," "Oh, Boy!" and "Maybe Baby," hit-maker Buddy Holly died tragically in a plane crash in 1959 at the age of 22, an event that has since been immor- talized in rock history as "the day the music died." In a fitting tribute, sculptor Grant Speed created an 8-foot bronze statue of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, which was recently moved to the newly-created Buddy and Maria Elena Holly Plaza, located across the street from the Buddy Holly Museum in Lubbock.

There, encircled by a "Walk of Fame" honoring other West Texas musicians, actors, and artists, park representatives determined that the walkway to the memorial needed better lighting to both showcase the statue as well as provide safe passage for the throngs of residents and tourists who visit the landmark daily.

"Before, there were only three lights illuminating the Buddy Holly statue and no pathway lighting leading up to it at all," says Scott McWright, Master Electrician for the City of Lubbock Parks & Recreation Department. "Now located in a presentation area in a newly-built 2 1⁄2-acre park, we realized we needed to light a path- way up to the landing area to create a more special effect. We wanted a high-impact lighting solution that would also be energy-efficient and require minimal maintenance."

Working with the RAB Lighting Application Engineering team and Lubbock-based electrical distributor Electracom Supply, McWright elected to light the walkway with RAB's 20 Watt LED bollard fixtures, which were installed in March 2011. "We wanted to light the pathway around the statue but not overpower it," Electracom Purchasing Manager Rick Morris explains. According to Morris, "the RAB fixtures were a perfect solution in that they deliver crystal clear, highly-efficient light as well as long life and low maintenance."

RAB 's popular "BLED20" system features a 42" high rectangular bollard which delivers 20 Watts of high-efficiency LED light-perfect for low-level lighting applications. "RAB's BLED20 fixture was an ideal choice to light the area approaching the Buddy Holly statue," confirms Ross Barna, CEO of the Northvale, New Jersey-based company. "Aside from being optimally suited for pathway lighting, the fixtures are full cutoff, fully shielded designs that deliver light precisely where it's needed. They're rated to last 50,000 hours, ensuring long life and minimal maintenance. In addition, the park will benefit from the outstanding color uniformity and rendition of the 20 Watt LED light engine, which pro- vides equivalent light output to 150 Watt Metal Halide systems while con- suming less than 20% of the energy."

According to Lubbock Parks Department's McWright, "the RAB LEDs look great-installation was simple, the system is very user-friendly, and the light output has been fantastic. It was a high-quality solution that also met our budget, so we feel it was a great value for the investment."

Electracom Supply's Morris agrees that the RAB LEDs were ideal on all accounts. "As we approached the lighting for this area landmark, we wanted to try LEDs-and RAB's system proved to be a perfect way to showcase the Buddy Holly statue while ‘shedding light' on a new technology. We find that people are always impressed with and amazed by how much light LEDs can produce."

Lubbock's Parks & Recreation Department is so pleased with its lighting choice that it's considering conversion to RAB LEDs in other parks that it maintains for the city. In the meantime, the park's man- agement is thrilled to have installed a highly-efficient and long-lasting lighting system to illuminate and pay homage to this famous rock legend. "It's a nice tribute to Buddy Holly," McWright concludes, "and the best he's ever looked."
